Equipment and Facilities Standards and Policy

  • Equipment and Facilities Standards and Policy

OSBA primarily permits gym facilities from the four Ottawa School Boards: CECCE, OCSB, CEPEO and OCDSB. City of Ottawa facilities are also used on occasion. Times and locations change from year to year and are dependent on school board permit decisions. Gym assignments by team is a very difficult process. As much as possible, the OSBA facilities coordinator will assign times based on the following principles:

    • Youngest teams receive earliest slots (i.e. 6:00/6:30pm). Older teams receive later gym times.
    • 1.5 hour practices for houseleague once/week up to U16 -- U16 and U19 are 2 hours; 1.5 hour practices up to U13 and 2 hour practices for U14 and older for all competitive teams — competitive teams practice twice/week; houseleauge and small ball practices once/week; extra training can be assigned into open gym times where possible. These numbers assume the current inventory of facilities are approved by the Ottawa School Boards. Any reduction in the number of permits or permit times and changes in predicted teams/coach availability will have an impact on the number and time of practices that can be held.
    • 1 “far” (e.g. Metcalfe/Kars) and 1 core (e.g. Riverside South/Findlay Creek/Manotick) location possible for each competitive teams as required
    • Maintain core locations for house league and small ball teams (i.e. Riverside South, South Keys, Findlay Creek and St. Mark/Manotick are considered core)
    • Larger gyms for oldest ages where possible; one tile and one wood gym for comp teams when possible (except novice)
    • Align practice nights for house league teams at a similar age brackets where possible
    • Leave open gym slots for anticipated gym cancellations that occur due to school activities if possible
    • Avoid Monday/Friday practice combinations and back to back practices except where requested
    • Younger ages on Fridays due to older player work commitments
    • If possible, coach availabilities will be considered.
Inventory restrictions

may not allow for all of these principles to be met for every team. Successful gym scheduling and use of gyms is dependent on our coaches always being respectful of each other, OSBA administration, the schools and school staff.
Contact OSBA's facilities coordinator: gyms@ottawasouthbasketball.ca to resolve any conflicts.
Schools are quick to cancel permits when facility rules are not respected which affects all OSBA teams. No permit = no practice time so please respect the following Ottawa school and OSBA facility rules at all times:

    • OSBA members and players may only access the school parking lot, washroom near the gym and the gym. No other parts of a school should be accessed by members, players or guests.
    • Do not enter gyms any earlier than the permit start time; exit gyms prior to permit end times. Respect the team's start time that follows you.
    • Coaches are responsible to ensure their players are out of the school before the permit time ends and picked up. Use a team volunteer if you cannot meet this requirement.
    • No bouncing balls in the school hallways.
    • No food or drinks other than water in the gyms.
    • No propping open any school doors at any time.
    • Do not adjust the heights of the baskets, ask the custodian on duty.
    • All outdoor footwear must remain outside the gyms at all times. Please do not carry them into the gym once removed.
    • If gym floors require sweeping, ask the custodian on duty for a broom and sweep them.
    • If the facility poses any danger to OSBA members using it, please advise the OSBA facilities coordinator: gyms@ottawasouthbasketball.ca.
    • All practice times are assigned to team schedules according to gym permits. Missing practices on a team schedule are likely a result of a school gym cancellations. Reference your gym permit and compare it to your team schedule to confirm it is all correct.
    • When cancelling a practice or game please advise the gym coordinator at: gyms@ottawasouthbasketball.ca with the date/time/location so they can open that time slot up for others to use and/or inform the school you are not coming.
 Clocks for games

OSBA has an inventory of table top clocks for use. School wall clocks can be used at St. Mark High School and St. Francis Xavier High School. Contact OSBA's facilities coordinator at gyms@ottawasouthbasketball.ca to arrange use. Note: the wall clock at St. Francis Xavier gym needs to be powered down when finished and the OSBA remote returned to the custodian on duty before you leave.

Door codes are required to enter St. Francis Xavier and St. Mark high schools only, Monday through Friday. On Saturdays the doors will be unlocked. The codes are only active 15 minutes before your permit time. The codes can be shared with players/parents and visiting teams on game nights, but cannot be used for anything other than accessing the gym during OSBA permit times (i.e. no roaming the schools or accessing lockers).

Contact gyms@ottawasouthbasketball.ca for the codes. For all other schools, custodians will be available to unlock doors from 6:00pm-6:15pm only for 6pm permit starts, or 6:30-6:45 for 6:30pm permit starts. If you are late, you may not be able to enter. For 7:30pm or 8pm practice start times, enter when the participants before you are leaving. All school doors must stay locked at all times. You cannot prop open doors. Use a volunteer to open the doors for your team at drop off and pick up as required.
